Pacific policing has taken a major step forward on the global stage. At the 25th INTERPOL Asian Regional Conference in Singapore from 18 to 19 September 2025, Fiji, Australia, and Papua New Guinea were elected to the INTERPOL Asia Regional Committee, marking a significant milestone in strengthening Pacific representation in international law enforcement.

This achievement follows the 52nd Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police (PICP) Conference in August 2025, where Police Chiefs and Commissioners raised concerns about the Pacific’s underrepresentation on INTERPOL’s Executive Committee. Currently grouped under the Asia Region, the Pacific has long sought a stronger voice within INTERPOL.

At the 52nd PICP Conference, Chiefs:

·      Welcomed the opportunity to share Pacific priorities and challenges with INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza;

·      Discussed the establishment of a Pacific Regional National Central Bureau; and

·      Supported a long-term aspiration to form a dedicated Pacific Regional Committee.

The Secretary General expressed his commitment for supporting these aspirations, including progressing proposals at the INTERPOL General Assembly in November.

The Regional conference brought together165 participants from 49 countries to address regional crime threats and strengthen cooperation. Delegates also highlighted the importance of deepening ties with key partners, including the Pacific Islands Chiefs of Police, to build a safer, more connected region.

Representation in global peace and security forums ensures Pacific voices, priorities, and challenges are heard and addressed. This election is a strategic step toward shaping international policing from a Pacific perspective.

This outcome directly supports Goal 2 of the PICP Strategic Plan 2025 – 2029 “Amplify the voice of Chiefs out into the Pacific region”, by enhancing Pacific policing leadership and influence in regional and global security forums.
